A BMW VIN is the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number that identifies one exact car. It encodes the manufacturer, the vehicle type and a unique serial number, and it unlocks both the factory specification and the service history. On a BMW or MINI you find it at the base of the windscreen, on the driver's door jamb and in the registration document.

Workshops often refer to a BMW by the last seven characters alone, the short chassis number. A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q, which keeps it from being confused with 1 and 0.

Stamped on the suspension strut tower under the bonnet.
In field E of the registration document, and usually in the listing too.
What if the VIN locations do not match?
Treat it as a reason to walk away. Mismatched numbers can point to a cloned identity, stolen parts or a major repair that replaced part of the body. None of these is something to sort out after you have paid.
What can a VIN tell me about a car?
Two different things. A decode tells you how the car was built: model, engine, output, gearbox and drive. That is what the free CheckVIN VIN decoder returns. A history report tells you what happened to it afterwards: workshop visits, recorded mileage, technical campaigns, warranty and the full factory option list. The two come from different data, so a decode alone cannot show a service history.
How do I spot a cloned VIN?
Check that every VIN location on the car matches the registration document.
Decode the VIN and compare the engine and body with the car in front of you.
Read the service history for visits in places or at mileages that make no sense for this car.
