What is a VIN decoder?
A VIN decoder reads the 17-character vehicle identification number and returns the technical identity of that exact car: model line, body, engine, power, drivetrain, transmission, colour, upholstery, factory, market, production dates, a photo and the full list of factory equipment.
It describes how the car was built. It does not describe what happened to it afterwards, so mileage, service history and repairs are not part of a decode.
CheckVIN reads the build record of that exact car rather than guessing from the characters, which is why the result names the actual variant, engine code, paint and options instead of a generic model family. European BMW VINs, for instance, do not encode the model year in character ten the way North American VINs do, and character-by-character tools get that wrong constantly.

How a BMW VIN is read
The 17 characters follow the same plan on every BMW Group car. The decoder reads the build record behind them, but the structure alone already tells you a lot. The full guide is in BMW VIN number explained.
- Characters 1 to 3, the maker: WBA for BMW, WBS for BMW M, WMW for MINI, SCA for Rolls-Royce
- Characters 4 to 7, the type code: the exact model and body, such as 11AR for a G22 M440i xDrive Coupé
- Character 9, a check digit that catches a mistyped VIN
- Characters 11 to 17, the plant and the serial number of that one car
- Option codes such as 337 for the M Sport package come from the build record, not from the VIN itself

How many characters does a VIN have?
Exactly 17. The letters I, O and Q are never used, because they are easily confused with the digits 1 and 0. Anything shorter or longer is not a valid VIN.
Why do the decoded specifications differ from the listing?
The decoder shows how the car left the factory. A seller may describe a later trim, a retrofit or simply the wrong variant. Where the two disagree, the VIN is the stronger evidence.
