What does a generic VIN check usually include?
Identity and registration data: model, year, sometimes theft or damage register entries and odometer readings from roadworthiness inspections. Useful, but it says very little about how a BMW was actually maintained.

Why does the difference matter when buying?

The mileage line. It should only ever rise.
Gaps in the service history. Anything over two years deserves a question.
